The Mole features 10 players, 2 continents, 4 countries, 34
cities, 28 days, 65 different hotels, 15,000 miles of travel, and 16 modes of
transportation, including planes, helicopters, buses, vans, boats, motorcycles and horses.
Oh, and up to $1,000,000 to the winner.
The premise of the show is that 10 players will travel to different
cities around the world to complete a number of missions. The catch is
that a "mole," or a saboteur, has been planted among them to stall
their efforts in winning the up to a $1 million dollar prize.
Ten contestants (five men, five women) are a diverse
group, representing various
ethnic groups and ranging in age from 20s to 60s.
The mole was picked from among the contestants. The
competition took place in four countries over two
continents; those locations also are secret for now.
The contestants, working as a team, are assigned to complete a series of difficult physical
and psychological tests (think MTV's Road Rules). Each test is worth a set amount of money and
the more tests that team completes, the more money the winner takes home. One of the players,
however, is a "mole" or saboteur, whose goal is to foil the efforts of the other nine players
without revealing his or her identity. At the end of each one-hour episode, the group is given
a quiz on The Mole's identity. The player who knows the least information about The Mole is then
immediately sent home. In the final dramatic episode, The Mole is revealed and the one remaining
player wins the jackpot, up to $1,000,000.
The Mole, was taped from September 19 through October 17,
2000, and will premiere Tuesday, January 9 at 8PM. The international mystery adventure series is
hosted by former ABC News correspondent Anderson Cooper.
A version of the show was a hit in Belgium, and the format
has been sold in 40 countries. During its premiere run in Belgiumlast year, the series captivated
audiences, drawing over half of the country's TV-viewing households to its first season finale. By
its second season, the finale drew a 64 share (in a time period that averaged a 20 share) and won
"The Golden Rose of Montreux," Europe's Emmy Award equivalent, for Best Overall Program.
'The Mole' is produced by Stone Stanley Entertainment. Scott A. Stone and David G. Stanley are the
executive producers. Clay Newbill serves as the co-executive producer.
